ABSTRACT The application of leaf area index (LAI) in coffee crop management depends on the availability of methodologies for proper estimation. The objective of this study was to develop a methodology for the visual assessment of LAI in coffee fields and to establish a protocol for training, evaluation, and feedback for evaluators. Four rounds of LAI measurements were conducted using visual estimates, two instruments (LAI 2200-C and AccuPAR LP-80), and defoliation of coffee hedgerows in Poás, Costa Rica. In each round, five workers visually estimated the LAI values on two occasions separated by 15 days, and feedback reinforcement was provided to each worker at the end of each round. Visual assessments showed high repeatability and reproducibility and the estimates were adjusted to the linear regression model in most cases. Evaluators improved their capacity to visually assess the LAI throughout the rounds, as the value of R2increased consistently for most workers, with values as high as 0.87. Instrumentation evaluation of LAI produced R2values of 0.5-0.6, with significant underestimation bias. The performance of the different methods is discussed in the context of widely spaced hedgerows. The proposed visual methodology constitutes a statistically sound, rapid, simple, and reliable method for determining the LAI of coffee fields to aid in decision-making for crop management.

RESUMO A aplicação do índice de área foliar (IAF) na gestão da cultura do cafeeiro depende da disponibilidade de metodologias para sua estimativa correta. É proposta aqui uma metodologia para a avaliação visual do IAF em plantas de café, por tanto se estabelece um protocolo para o treinamento dos avaliadores. Foram feitas quatro rodadas de medições do IAF utilizando estimativas visuais, dois instrumentos (LAI 2200-C e AccuPAR LP-80), e desfolhações de sebes de café na Costa Rica. A cada rodada, cinco trabalhadores estimaram visualmente os valores do IAF em duas ocasiões e separados por 15 dias. Ao final de cada rodada, foi dada uma retroalimentação a cada trabalhador. A avaliação visual mostrou alta repetibilidade e reprodutibilidade, e as estimativas foram ajustadas para o modelo de regressão linear na maioria dos casos. Os avaliadores melhoraram sua capacidade de avaliar visualmente o IAF ao longo das rodadas, e o valor de R2 aumentou consistentemente para a maioria dos trabalhadores, com valores tão altos quanto 0,87. A avaliação do IAF por instrumentos produziu valores de R2 de 0,5-0,6, com significativa tendência de subestimação, e não se ajustou ao modelo de regressão linear. O desempenho dos diferentes métodos é discutido no contexto de coberturas com amplo espaço. A metodologia visual proposta constitui uma determinação sólida, rápida, simples e confiável do IAF na lavoura do café e considera-se uma ajuda na tomada de decisões para a gestão da safra.

Resumen Introducción. Las variables climáticas han sido en el cultivo del café en la región centroamericana; las altas temperaturas, altos niveles de luz ultravioleta (UV), las precipitaciones y su intensidad, han causado serios problemas para el desarrollo del cultivo. Hay desequilibrios fisiológicos causantes de pérdidas en la estimulación y cuajes florales y, según la variedad, las mermas de la producción pueden ser superiores al 60 %. Objetivo. Conocer el efecto que tiene un nuevo bioestimulante sobre la floración, maduración y calidad de los frutos en el cultivo del café. Materiales y métodos. El trabajo se realizó durante los años 2018 y 2019, en la finca La Hilda, lote Murillo, localizada en la provincia de Alajuela, Cantón San Pedro de Póas, Costa Rica, bajo manejo agroecológico. Se evaluó el efecto de la aplicación de un producto bioestimulante foliar a dosis de 3 l ha-1, certificado para producción en agricultura ecológica. Se utilizaron dos tratamientos, dos y tres aplicaciones, de bioestimulante y se compararon con un testigo absoluto. Los parámetros evaluados fueron: la estimulación y cuaje floral, nudos productivos para el próximo ciclo y calidad de los frutos. Resultados. No existieron diferencias estadísticas significativas entre los dos tratamientos del bioestimulante (3 l ha-1) en contraste con el testigo. Al evaluar la mayor producción de frutos cuajados y mayor calidad de estos, cuando se realizaron las aplicaciones durante la fase de floración y fructificación, se obtuvo una homogeneidad de la maduración y mayor número de cerezas por ramas. Conclusión. El empleo del nuevo bioestimulante con dos aplicaciones foliares sobre el cultivo del café, estimuló la floración, maduración y calidad de los frutos respecto al testigo sin tratar.

Abstract Introduction. Climatic variables have been affecting coffee cultivation on Central American region; high temperatures, high levels of ultraviolet light (UV), rainfall and its intensity have caused serious problems for the development of the crop. There are physiological imbalances that cause losses in stimulation and flower setting, and depending on the variety, production losses can exceed 60 %. Objective. To determine the effect of a new biostimulant on flowering, ripening and fruit quality in coffee crop. Materials and methods. The work was carried out during the years 2018 and 2019, at La Hilda farm, Murillo lot, located in Alajuela province, canton San Pedro of Poas, Costa Rica, under agroecological management. The effect of the application of a foliar biostimulant product was evaluated at a dose of 3 l ha-1, certified for organic production agriculture, was evaluated. Two treatments, two and three applications of bioestimulant were used and compared with an absolute control. The parameters evaluated were: stimulation and floral set, productive nodes for the next cycle, and fruits quality. Results. There were no significant statistical differences between the the two biostimulant treatments (3 l ha-1) in contrast to the control. When evaluating the greater fruit set and fruit quality production, when applications were made during the flowering and fruiting phase, homogeneity of ripening, and a greater number of cherries per branch were obtained. Conclusion. The use of the new biostimulant with two foliar applications on the coffee crop stimulated the flowering, ripening, and fruit quality with respect to the untreated control.
